meskerem 08-23-05:
Silence of the voices of reason and moderation concerns the Eritrean
Public. EDA's credibility at risk.
The recent killings of the four members of the Eritrean Defense Forces
by the Eritrean Jihadist organization, the Eritrean Islamic Islah
Movement, and the Jihadist video release by the Italian government
that depicted the Eritrean government as “crusader”, has greatly alarmed
the Eritrean public, especially coming right after the attempt by
terrorists in London where an individual of an Eritrean origin
was named as a suspect.
The Eritrean public looked for leadership in such a trying times and
expected reaction by the leadership of the Eritrean opposition
organizations, EDA, , Eritrean human rights organizations and concerned
citizens. Expression of concern, to say the least, was expected. To
date, only EDP issued a statement condemning the attack. Some
concerned individuals, sadly only with Christian names, have expressed
concern. The rest have been mute , silent or have been muted, silenced.
Articles written in Arabic language have only shown support for the
actions of the Jihadist organization. Some have attacked meskerem
for the coverage of the news and some have even called for
ejection/expulsion of EDP from EDA.
Such divided reaction and the silence referred to above has raised
a major concern as to whether the political clout of the Jihadists and
Islamists in the opposition in general and the EDA in particular is such
that the voices of reason and moderation have been silenced and muted.
The next meeting of the EDA that is expected to be held at the end of
this month will tell the Eritrean public where the EDA stands on this
matter. Will the EDA succumb to the pressures from the fundamentalists,
their supporters and their foot-soldiers and do a window treatment on
this matter or will it courageously distance itself from the
actions of the Jihad organization and stop the machinations that want to
place EDA on the West’s list of terrorist organizations.

ELF heading to its Congress and at
cross-roads. Will it change and lead or regress and squander a
golden opportunity?
meskerem 8-17-05 ELF
is the only prominent Eritrean opposition organization that has stayed
united and shamed the forces that, even on the eve of its congress, are
sleeplessly conspiring to destroy its unity.
The ELF is expected to hold its Congress sometime early
September. There is a lot of anticipation. There is high expectation
from the congress as the outcome of the congress will
indicate whether the ELF will change to meet the challenges of the
changing times and take its deserved leading role or whether it
will be stuck in the old days, regress and be deprived of the role it
could play in advancing the goals of the National Democratic Revolution.
Well wishers are hoping to see a new ELF, firm on its
National Democratic principles, goals and its traditions. The Eritrean
political reality prays for and calls upon the ELF to show willingness
to change. It is also the hope and wish of all to see ELF , the only
organization that has maintained its unity, to come out united
with injection of new democratic blood and be a bridge for unity
of our people. |
