It
has been reported recently that there are about 600 Eritrean refugees in
detention in different places in Libya. Currently 15 Eritrean refugees from
Jewazat Prison in Tripoli are facing deportation to Eritrea.
As per its mission statement and in
line with the urgent need to protect the basic rights of the Eritreans in the
country, NECS-Europe has established appropriate contacts with the UNHCR
headquarter in Geneva. NECS-Europe has so far received assurances that the
UNHCR is following closely the situation and is having its branch office in
Tripoli defend their case legally within the frame work of the applicable
international law.
NECS-Europe
will ceaselessly exert pressure to have its efforts materialize. Its objectives
are twofold: a) block any deportation attempts and b) procure the liberation of
all those who are being locked in the detention centres.
NECS-Europe
is thus calling upon all Eritreans in Diaspora to rally behind the cause of
Eritrean refugees in general and those at risk of deportation in particular.
