(Washington, DC, January 31,
2008) – The established democracies are
accepting flawed and unfair elections for
political expediency, Human Rights Watch said
today in releasing its
World Report
2008. By allowing autocrats to pose as
democrats, without demanding they uphold the
civil and political rights that make democracy
meaningful, the United States, the European
Union and other influential democracies risk
undermining human rights worldwide.
..States claiming the mantle of democracy,
including Kenya and Pakistan,
should guarantee the human rights that are
central to it, including the rights to free
expression, assembly and association, as well as
free and fair elections. But in 2007 too many
governments, including Bahrain, Jordan,
Nigeria, Russia and Thailand, acted
as if simply holding a vote is enough to prove a
nation “democratic,” and Washington, Brussels
and European capitals played along, Human Rights
Watch said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — More and
more, top government diplomats are straying
from official Bush foreign policy as the
administration wanes, leaving Secretary of
State Condoleezza Rice struggling to keep
them in check
McCormack was
also busy this week trying to
tamp down possible repercussions
from comments made Wednesday by
the top U.S. envoy for Africa,
Jendayi Frazer. She had spoken
of "ethnic cleansing" in Kenyan
violence.
He took great
pains to distance the
administration from the term,
refusing to repeat the words
"ethnic cleansing," which many
regard as a precursor to
"genocide," in reference to the
violence in Kenya that has
claimed more than 800 lives and
displaced tens of thousands in
the past three weeks.
McCormack
acknowledged that the situation
in Kenya was of great concern
and said some violent incidents
and displacements appeared to be
driven by ethnicity, but he also
said it was too early to
characterize the situation in
such terms. He indicated that
Frazer, the assistant secretary
of state for African affairs,
had been speaking for herself.
"She made some
comments based on her firsthand
assessment from a trip several
weeks ago," McCormack told
reporters. Asked if the Bush
administration shared Frazer's
assessment, he replied: "She
said what she said. I am going
to stick to what I said."

Statement
on UN Security Council Resolution 1798(2008)
By Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Feb 1, 2008, 15:19
Security Council Resolution
1798(2008) has no basis in either the Algiers Peace Agreement or the UN
Charter. The Resolution dwells on tangential issues in an apparent
desire to rationalise and justify the UN Security Council’s failure to
shoulder its legal obligations to date. In the event, it will not
advance the cause of legality and international justice. Resolution
1798(2008) will only contribute to a complication of the situation and
is ultimately meant to serve the US agenda of “escalation and management
of crises in the region”...full

BERLIN — A growing legal controversy is
threatening to discredit Luigi Falorni’s child soldier drama “Heart of
Fire” a week before its premiere at Berlin Film Festival.
_____________________________________________________________________

If the west was better
informed about the war crimes and human rights abuses
committed by Meles' military forces in Somalia and
Ogaden, western taxpayers might balk at the thought that
their governments are providing Ethiopia with hundreds of
millions of dollars of military and economic aid.
And if western governments
were more consistent and less selective in their reaction to
human rights abuses around the world, they might be less
inclined to turn a blind eye to Ethiopia's failure to abide
by international norms in pursuit of its military objectives
in
Somalia and Ogaden.
