COUNTDOWN TO FEB

Why did the EDA
postponed (suspend)
the meeting? |
EDA fails to inform the public
appropriately, in the official languages, concerning its meetings
and related information as promised creating public confusion.
The public was promised that information concerning the Khartoum
meeting was going to be provided through a spokesperson and that
all media outlets would be provided with statements and briefs.
Due to EDA's failure in providing such official information timely
in Arabic and Tigrinya ,the public that is following the meeting
with unprecedented interest, has been disadvantaged. The
present information about the reason for the postponement of the
2nd meeting can be stated as an example. Why did the EDA postponed
(suspend) the meeting? No official statement just different
versions/stories by the media. Is the information posted in
gabeel.com concerning the formation of a new secretariat made up
of only 15 members correct? If so, what organization is not
represented, why.... |

الإرتري للخدمات الإعلامية (ECMS) –6/2/2005م |
ECMS 2-6-05:
EDA Meeting
postponed upon request of a member organization.
ECMS, in Arabic language, has reported today that the EDA meeting
in Khartoum has been postponed till the third week of February.
The report stated that a member organization had requested the
postponement but did not specify which organization
requested the postponement. Meskerem has learned from reliable
source that the EDP delegation to the first meeting had requested
a longer time period till the 2nd meeting. The request was not
accepted. The meeting was then advised that the delegates of the
meeting, Mr. Mesfun Hagos, the Chairman of EDP and Mohamed
Nur Ahmed, member of Secretariat of EDP and head of EDP's dialogue
delegation, might not be able to make it to the 4th February
meeting. The source did not disclose why EDP requested to prolong
the second meeting. It is not clear whether EDP delegation
had actually participated in the 2nd meeting putting into question
whether the meeting started with all the 16 member organizations
present as reported by ECMS. |

Pictorial Report: EDA meeting in Khartoum: gabeel.com
02-05-05 |
via Email
Saturday, February 05, 2005 5:39 AM:
Reaction from the
public to Dr. Beyene's statement:
..."It
is accepting the fact that, any person who is entrusted to
represent the public, is himself a public property."
...."I appreciate Meskerem for raising the issue of absence
of prominent figures
from EDA meetings in Khartoum, because the public needs and
deserves to know
the reason. I also appreciate Dr. Beyene for taking his time to
inform the public about his absence, but simply stating those
reasons would have been enough"..

Eritreana.com 2-3-05:
Dr. Beyene Kidane's, Chairman of ELF-NC, absence
from the Khartoum meeting explained. In a statement
issued by the chairman in Eritreana.com, he stated,"
I had
to hastily leave for Europe in face of the upcoming meeting in
Khartoum because I had pressing private matters to attend that
could not wait."
As a chairman of one of the
main opposition organizations and a public figure, the public does
care and want to know the reason for his absence from such a
historic meeting.
No
more no less.
It is to be remembered that on 2-1-05, meskerem had reported "EDA final meeting will see the
absence of the three Chairmen of three prominent opposition
organizations, Dr. Beyene of ELF-NC, Seyoum Harestay of ELF-RC and
Mesfin Hagos of EDP"..

Mesfin Hagos may not
attend the final meeting of the EDA scheduled for 2-4-05.
EDA final meeting will see the
absence of the three Chairmen of three prominent opposition
organizations, Dr. Beyene of ELF-NC, Seyoum Harestay of ELF-RC and
Mesfin Hagos of EDP. All other organizations have delegations that
include their chairs. |
|
Awate 2-2-05:
Awate has posted a meeting announcement in Berkley,
California for 2-6-05 with Mr. Mesfin Hagos, the Chairman of
EDP. Reached by phone, EDP officials would not confirm or deny
whether Mesfin Hagos will participate in the upcoming final
meeting of the EDA in Khartoum or whether the meeting has been
postponed. However, the distance between Khartoum and California
and the time needed for the meeting in Khartoum makes it
impractical for Mesfin to attend to both engagements. With strong
demand put forward by the ELF-RC editorial yesterday and the
apparent "earlier commitment" absence of the Chairman of one of
the heavy players in the opposition arena from the meeting, the
EDA final meeting has a tough job ahead of it. |
Nharnet.com 2-1-05:
ELF-RC makes public its expectation of the EDA final agreement
with suggestions, appeals and warnings.
In its 2-1-05 editorial in
Tigrinya under the title "The challenges awaiting us are
complicated and tough", the ELF-RC states that, at this time,
the EDA should lead by consensus only and not by voting mechanism
as the organizations need time to develop trust among each other.
Leadership of the EDA should be composed and be based on the
political clout/weight of the organizations not mere existence as
organizations. It also warns that the charter and the
clarifications provided thereof should not be outside the
agreed upon principles and not contradict or harm laid principles
of member organizations. In short, the ELF-RC seems to call upon
the EDA's final meeting on 2-4-05, not to repeat the
blunders of the ENA. |
Asmarino.com 2-1-05:
Asmarino.com calls for the
condemnation
of the killing of the 7 members of the Eritrean Defense
Force by the Mujahdeen of an Islamist organization. Asmarino.com
has condemned the killing of 7 members of the Eritrean Defense
Force by an Islamist organization . The report of the killing was
posted by the Eritrean Islamic Islah Movement website on 29 Jan
2005
(islaher.org). Asmarino, in its front page and
under the heading "An
Asmarino.com Appeal for 'No more violence!' ",
stated, "..no Eritrean life, whether
one is a conscript or a civilian, should be taken for any reason
because violence will only accelerate the cycle of
misunderstanding, fear, anger and more losses of life." And
concluded its statement by stating "Please join us in condemning
this disturbing act of violence."

Federal States for
Eritrea? Mr. Yassin of EFDM states: |
|
"The outcry
of the tabloid web sties these days about the yet undisclosed
charter of the newly established Eritrean Democratic Alliance (EDA)
that reportedly endorsed rightfully a future decentralized system
of governance based on ethnic or social commonality and the rights
of all ethnic groups to consider a religion based legal code, if
approved by the citizens of a specific group through a legitimate
democratic process, as that of
Nigeria’s
federal states, if confirmed, would be a grand step forward in
ethnic relations, in group and social relations, and promises the
nation with a chance for a peaceful coexistence in a democratic
society, contrary to the contention of the scare mongers that such
an inclusion of legitimate rights will actually embed the process
of national unity, just because it is foreign to their little
enclave of corrupt group. "
