UNMEE media briefing notes 5 May 2005

..."[from Asmara]:
Do you know who [did] was doing the shooting?
Chief of Staff:
From the evidence given by the eyewitnesses and the Militia, people crossed allegedly from the Ethiopian side and they shot at one of the Militia who was a little far away from where the other two were. They shot him in the foot and again in the thigh. He managed to crawl for some distance and eventually when they [the shooters] came close to him, eventually shot him in the head. The others escaped and that’s how they managed to report the incident. "...

Meskerem 05-02-05: New Messenger of Peace? Garang's Mediation to bring peace between Eritrea and Sudan.?
Well placed rumors  coming out of Khartoum and Cairo express optimism that the  mediation of Mr. Garang, the designated first Vice President of New Sudan and leader of the Sudanese Peoples’ Liberation Movement (SPLM),  will result in a meeting between President Bashir of Sudan and President Isayas of Eritrea sometime this month. The sources opine also  that  Mr. Garang's  peace mission has the backing of Egypt. If successful, all parties are expected to benefit from it.

Dr. Yohannes Zeremariam, Head of Foreign Office of the ELF met with the Eritrean Public in Washington DC;  Mr. Adhanom Gebremariam, vice-General Secretary of EDA attended the meeting.

Mr. T'har Shedeli,  ELF Washington DC Chapter Chair,  gave introductory speech by thanking the participants and  describing historically the role of the ELF, including his branch that has been in  existence since  early 70s. Before the start of the meeting, video show of  ELF meetings in Sudan was presented.

Our transition to democracy.

Dr. Yohannes started the meeting by describing the theme of the meeting: our transition to democracy. He asked the audience why it is taking us this long to remove the dictatorship and set up a democratic government?  There is definitely something wrong.  Is it because we have not clearly defined our goals or is it because we have not  been able to achieve what we set as goals?....full report>>>>>

The website has  raised questions concerning financial issues by stating in pertinent part, "..he is reported to have always admitted and claimed to have been only fourteen-thousand (14, 000.00). Many people are therefore asking where the remaining sixteen-thousand (16, 000.00) Birr, have been flowing into.."  full text
