Let us not forget our war veterans,
and give them hope and support to carry on.
Brothers and Sisters in the Diaspora,
17 year ago after 30 years of struggle against all odds, Eritrea achieved
Independence. Indeed it was the most memorable day for all Eritreans, because
Eritreans for the first time we could identify with a country to call our own.
We all cheered, rejoiced and danced in the street for several days and nights
without ever considering the whereabouts of all of our disabled Eritrean war
heroes and veterans.

The veterans of our armed struggle (Wuguat Harnet) in Kessella.

Wed 12/17/2008
I don’t remember who said it,
but it is a saying that fits what has been highlighted in recent days on
meskerem.net, pertaining to the veterans of the Eritrean armed struggle.
These particular veterans happen
to be those who served under the banner of the ELF and who were injured
seriously and left to languish in Kessella , Eastern Sudan.
Last year I gave $100.00 to a friend who was going to Kessella and asked
him if he could buy a sheep for them. My idea was to pay at least for
their lunch for a day. I am sure individuals have done the same thing.
But that is not a solution and never was. I have learned on my inquiry
about their situation and heard the circumstances they were living
under.
The
most touching and gracious thing I heard was when my friend told me “ do
you know that the women who take care of their laundry and cooking are
the same women who were helping them when ELF was still in the field”.
There is nothing that can proof
more than the selflessness of these women that the owners of the
Eritrean revolution were and are the Eritrean people.
There is a view that suggests
with the money that has been raised or to be raised it would be prudent
to start a business that could generate cash flow. Just an idea…..
Asking contributions could cause
fatigue. Because usually very few elements dedicate some of there time
to a cause, then it becomes business as usual, going back to doing
nothing.
My great appreciation, to all
who are participating in this meaningful Endeavour, and let’s make this
initiative tangible and lasting.

My name is Selina and my father was telling me about
the veterans in Eritrea, who were wounded and fought for
our independence. And to know that they are lay in beds,
starving, because they have no money for food and not
enough care for them. I felt so sorry, and I'm
here to make a difference.
Now, I will start saving my lunch money to give to the
people they gave.

We became aware of their predicament through a
radio interview conducted by the respected and
popular Voice of Eritrea out of Halifax, Canada.
The host, Naz Yemane, interviewed the Director
of the Association of Disabled Eritreans, Mr.
Tesfay Teklezgi from France, Mr. Osman
Mohammed, the manager of the center, from
Kassala, Sudan ( Both of them disabled
during the libration struggle as were their
comrades.) and Mr. Zehaye Araya, member
the board from Chicago, Illinois.
The disabled veterans reside in Kassala, Sudan.
The interviewees told the audience of the radio
program that the disabled veterans were in
urgent need of financial aid as they would be
running out of money for food and medicine come
January 15, 2009. They don't have budget
for the year 2009. That is why we appealed
for urgent financial help. This website has
devoted its front page to raise funds for the
veteran heroes who sacrificed so much so that
the people of Eritrea can have an independent
nation. Because of the over 100,000 young
Eritreans who gave their life and many thousands
who became wounded and disabled, Eritrea is now
an independent nation, The nation should not
forget its disabled heroes. It is not only a
humanitarian issue but also a human rights
issue.
Thank you again, Mrs. Holley Hall, Mr. Neil
Wells, Mr. Anonymous, Mr. Yogesh Patel, Mrs.
Barabara Corsiglia, Mrs. Colleen Wozniak,
