Eritrea dismissed Ethiopian accusation of bomb plot

Feb 2, 2007 (ADDIS ABABA) — Eritrea on Friday rejected accusations by bitter rival Ethiopia that Eritrea had plotted to bomb an African leaders summit.

"This is not the first time the Ethiopians have fabricated stories to try and discredit the Eritrean government," said Eritrean presidential spokesman Yemani Gebremeskel.

"This is an outrageous claim. We have not planted bombs in Addis Ababa, or anywhere in Ethiopia," he said by telephone from the Eritrean capital, Asmara.

meskerem 2/2/07: Ethiopia's outlandish accusation of Eritrean bomb plot received angry rejection by the Eritrean diaspora in the US approached by meskerem. Eritreans living in the US who were interviewed by meskerem rejected Ethiopia's accusation of bomb plot and expressed concern about Ethiopia's present and future fabrication of similar provocative actions to justify planned action. Some members of the Eritrean opposition stated that the Eritrean regime might be dictator and violate human rights but not that stupid to engage in such suicidal act. Some shared concern that the planned Eritrean opposition congress in Ethiopia will be associated with such action

As fighting intensified Friday between Somali Islamists and an Ethiopian intervention force, Western diplomats and experts warned that U.S. policy in the Horn of Africa - intended to curb Islamic radicalism - may not only be fueling this newest conflict, but also may be making it easier for al-Qaida to gain a foothold in the strategic region.
