UN says Ethiopian troops breached de-militarized zone inside Eritrea, (AFP/ST)

Nov 24, 2005 (ASMARA) — The UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) said Thursday that a small group of Ethiopian soldiers had breached a de-militarized buffer zone inside Eritrea amid soaring border tensions.

A day after the UN Security Council threatened to slap sanctions on both Addis Ababa and Asmara if either resumes hostilities in the long-running dispute, UNMEE said the Ethiopian troops had been in the zone for five days.

'"There was an occupation," UNMEE spokeswoman Gail Bindley-Taylor-Sainte said of the incursion which violates the 2000 peace deal that ended a bloody two-year border war between the two nations...."

Nov 24, 2005, 20:28
The Security Council has adopted another deplorable resolution (1640/2005) yesterday on the border conflict between Eritrea and Ethiopia. Although the Algiers Peace Agreement, legally guaranteed by the UN Security Council, and fundamental principles of the UN Charter have been grossly and repeatedly violated by Ethiopia, The Security Council is threatening to invoke, for the first time, Article 41 of the UN Charter to impose economic and diplomatic sanctions essentially against Eritrea.
This lopsided resolution underscores one glaring fact: it is not international law and the Charter of the United Nations that govern the conduct of the Security Council but sheer power politics and the narrow interests of major powers.

 Year 2006 Wish
Government and Opposition to start Dialogue?

meskerem 11-23-05
EDA denies report; other opposition organizations yet to comment.
Hussein Kalifa, the EDA chairman who is reported to be in   Mekele, Ethiopia on EDA mission,  denied the report that his organization was approached by Sudanese officials  to open dialogue with the Eritrean government.

Menghisteab Asmerom, Head of EDA Information Department  asked by meskerem to comment on the report, stated, "Nothing to that effect has happened with our organization and we do not know either whether other organisations were approached or not. We are just reading it like you and others on the web site."

Observers: More Likely..EDA last meeting reiterated dialogue with the regime, the regime takes the Sudan peace initiative and sends Abdalla Jabir to Sudan.
Many observers believe that there is high probability that the opposition, through Sudanese officials  or Eritrean elders in Sudan,  would offer Jabir dialogue on the basis of the EDA political decision. It seems that the power centers of EDA now fell  confident and in full control to take the EDA along the dialogue path.

The Report
: GIC which, nowadays,  seems to be getting  "leaks" from insider sources in Eritrea,  had reported that the Eritrean regime had finally accepted to "hold negotiations with some particular Eritrean opposition organizations' through the initiative taken by the  Chairman of a prominent Sudanese opposing party. The report added that the Eritrean opposition parties have rejected the initiative sighting that the  “conduct of talks” with the government in an individual basis would contradict with the principle of the opposition that expects to deal with the regime as a group not as individual organizations.
